On January 17, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to release the main indicators of the national economy in 2019. Among the main indicator data, it is worth mentioning that the per capita GDP in 2019 broke through 10000 US dollars for the first time, and the total GDP was close to 100 trillion yuan. How do you understand the symbolic significance of these two data? Ning Jizhe, director of the National Bureau of Statistics, gave an answer.

Ning Jizhe said that in 2019, China's GDP reached 99.1 trillion yuan, nearly 100 trillion yuan. This not only means that China's total economic output is expanding, but also indicates that the quality of China's economic development is steadily improving, and people's lives are continuously improving; It has not only laid a solid foundation for China to achieve a moderately prosperous society in all respects this year, but also made due contributions to the development and progress of all mankind. It is of important symbolic significance, which can be understood from the following four aspects.

First, this marks the further enhancement of China's comprehensive national strength. In 2019, China's GDP reached 99086.5 billion yuan, that is, the total economic output was close to 100 trillion yuan, reaching 14.4 trillion US dollars at the annual average exchange rate. According to our comparative calculation, this is roughly equivalent to the sum of 2018 GDP of four major developed countries, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and France, which ranked third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the world in 2018. Their sum is about 14.7 trillion US dollars. China's economic development, political stability, cultural progress, social harmony, ecological improvement, and national defense consolidation are unstoppable.

Second, this marks the further improvement of China's social productivity. The fundamental position of China's agriculture has been consolidated. In 2019, China's total grain output was 660 million tons, which is a large grain producing country and also a high grain output in China's history. Our industrial system is increasingly perfect, with all the industrial classifications in the world. Our infrastructure is more sound. At the end of the year, the total operating mileage of high-speed railway reached 35000 kilometers, accounting for more than 2/3 of the global high-speed railway mileage; The expressway mileage exceeds 140000 kilometers, ranking first in the world. The installed power capacity is close to 2032 kilowatts, the number of Internet users is 860 million, and the modern information and communication system is good.

Third, this marks the further improvement of the quality of life of our people. The improvement of employment quality is reflected in the rising proportion of residents in urban employment. In 2019, there were 440 million urban employees, accounting for 57.1% of all employees, up 1 percentage point year on year.

The level of residents' income is rising, and the quality of income is also improving. In 2019, the per capita disposable income of residents across the country will exceed 30000 yuan; The quality of consumption has improved and the consumption structure of residents has upgraded. In 2019, there are two proportions that illustrate this point. One is that the per capita consumption expenditure of residents in the service industry has reached 45.9%, an increase of 1.7 percentage points over the previous year. The other is that the per capita food consumption expenditure in the total consumption expenditure, namely the Engel coefficient, is 28.2% in 2019, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points over the previous year, and the service consumption has increased, The overall decline in food consumption reflects the upgrading of the consumption structure. The quality of life has improved. The number of people who have houses and cars and travel abroad is increasing. The per capita housing area of urban residents is close to 40 square meters. The number of private cars in China has reached 200 million, the number of domestic tourists is 5.8 billion, and the number of outbound tourists is 140 million. This reflects the further expansion of the middle-income group.

Fourth, this marks China's further contribution to human development and progress. According to World Bank data, the population size of countries with per capita GDP of more than 10000 US dollars in 2018 is nearly 1.5 billion. As China, with a total population of 1.4 billion, steps into the ranks of countries with a per capita GDP of more than 10000 US dollars, the global population of countries in this ranks will approach 3 billion people. Among the 7 billion people in the world, the per capita GDP of 3 billion people has reached more than 10000 US dollars due to China's accession. This is a major progress in human economic and social development, as well as China's contribution to the world as a new developing economy. Therefore, to do China's business well is to contribute to the world.
